Wine Dinner 2

Image
For this wine dinner, I made a five-course meal with my roommates and some friends and paired wine with three of the courses. The three courses I paired wine with were the main course of creamy shrimp and sausage pasta, an appetizer of pigs in a blanket, and a dessert dish of chocolate. We also made roasted carrots as well as roasted zucchini and squash to serve as side dishes for the pasta. The three wines we drank were an Akiyoshi 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, a Barefoot Pink Moscato, and a col deL'utia 2020 Prosecco. Later in this blog, I will explain the various pairings we were going for and how they worked out for us. All pictures will be included at the end. In chronological order, I will begin discussing each of the three pairings beginning with the Cabernet Sauvignon and pigs in a blanket. The main motivation behind this pairing was Cabernet Sauvignon's stellar ability to pair well with meat. While we were breaking the rule of starting with less flavorful wines, I believe...

Wine Tasting - Paterson Sauvignon Blanc

Image
Front View of the Wine Label Back View of the Wine Label Myself and the Wine Bottle For this wine tasting report, I drank Paterson Sauvignon Blanc. This wine contains Sauvignon Blanc grapes and is from Marlborough New Zealand. This wine is a 2021 vintage and costs $20 on nakedwines.com. nakedwines.com reviewed this wine as"Mike’s juicy Sauvignon Blanc is loaded with fresh, citrusy flavors and ends with a light, crisp finish — it’ll bring you a glass of sunshine any time of year." From page 1771 in the Wine Folly textbook, Sauvignon Blancs generally have notes of white peach, green melon, lemon balm, tarragon, and grass. My personal review of this wine is definitely positive. I would say it is my favorite white wine thus far in my wine drinking journey. I was able to pick up a lot of citrus notes, but my favorite part was its smoothness and low acidity. I know that this should taste like cat piss since its from New Zealand, but I didn't really pick up on that so much. Over...

Front View of the Wine Label Back View of the Wine Label Myself and the Fella with the Wine Bottle For this wine tasting report, I drank F Stephen Millier Merlot. This wine contains Merlot grapes and is from Lodi in California. This wine is a 2020 vintage and costs $13 on nakedwines.com. nakedwines.com reviewed this wine as"Dark cherry flavors and a lush, velvety texture abound in Stephen’s Lodi Merlot. This juicy red is a crowd-favorite among Angels, with an average 91% rating over 7 vintages." From page 1699 in the Wine Folly textbook merlots generally have notes of cherry, vanilla, cedar, pencil lead, and toasted nutmeg. My personal review of this wine is rather positive. I was able to pick up on the cherry notes which I really enjoyed. I also found the wine to be very smooth which I was a big fan of. Overall, I enjoyed the fact that this red was less loud than some others I have tried. In conclusion, this is one of the best reds that I have tried and I would drink it agai...

Wine Dinner

Image
For this wine dinner, I made a three-course meal with my roommates and some friends and paired wine with each of the courses. The three courses were the main course of chicken parmesan, a side dish of ratatouille, and a dessert dish of homemade brownies. We also made spaghetti to go with the chicken parmesan. The three wines we drank were a g.stepp 2020 Riesling, an F. Stephen Millier 2020 Rose, and an F. Stephen Millier 2020 Pinot Grigio. Later in this blog, I will explain the various pairings we were going for and how they worked out for us. All pictures will be included at the end. In no particular order, I will begin discussing each of the three pairings beginning with the Riesling and brownies. We decided to make this pairing for a number of reasons. The high acidity pairs well with the relatively high-fat content in the brownies, we found this to be a good pairing based on reading the Wine Folly textbook which said acidity and fat pair well together. We also knew that Rieslings a...

Wine Tasting - Arrow Creek Pinot Grigio

Image
Front View of the Wine Label Back View of the Wine Label Myself and the Fellas with the Wine Bottle For this wine tasting report, I drank Arrow Creek Pinot Grigio. This wine contains Pinot Grigio grapes and is from California in the United States. This wine is a 2019 vintage and costs $4.80 at Kroger. I was unable to find a review for this exact vintage, but Wine Enthusiast reviewed the 2010 vintage as "A bit heavy for Pinot Grigio, with soft, fruit juice flavors of oranges, peaches and mangoes." From page 654 in the Wine Folly textbook Pinot Grigios generally have notes of white peach, lemon zest, and cantalope. My personal review of this wine is rather negative. Overall, I am not really a fan of Pinot Grigio as I find the taste to be boring and overly acidic and I generally don't like white wines as much. I found this Pinot Grigio to be worse than some other Pinot Grigios that I have had. The flavor was very sharp and acidic and overall not enjoyable to drink. I drank...

Wine Tasting - Rondel Brut Cava

Image
Front View of the Wine Label Back View of the Wine Label Myself and the Wine Label For this tasting report I drank Rondel Brut Cava. Grapes included in this wine are Macabeo, Xarello, and Paradella. This wine is from the Cava region of Spain. This wine does not have a specific vintage year and costs $9.50. Total Wine reviewed this wine as "More fruity than dry, this ""extreme brut"" is filled with soft peach and nut flavors, their fragrance lifted by floral tones of white lilies. Briny and fresh, the flavors last. Fantastic with shrimp tempura." From page 1567 in the Wine Folly textbook, Cava generally have flavors of quince, lime, yellow apple, chamomile, and almond cream. My personal review of this wine is rather negative. I have had champagne a few times before and this cava did not live up to the experience I have had with champagne. I know cava is not supposed to be exactly like champagne, but I found the dryness of this wine to be not to my liking. I...

Image
Front View of the Wine Label Back View of the Wine Label The Fellas and Myself with the Bottle of Wine For this tasting report, I drank Quevedo 10 Year Old Tawny Port. The grape varieties in this wine include Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta, Barroca, Tinta Roriz, and many more. This wine comes from the Porto region of Portugal and is a mix of multiple vintage years. A bottle costs 19 dollars. This wine was reviewed by Roger Voss and received a rating of 88, Voss also described it as "Deep, almost black in color, it has a few flecks of gold to show the wood aging. Aged in big barrels, it has kept considerable fruitiness and fragrant acidity. It's sweet at the end." From the Wine Folly textbook on page 684, ports generally have flavors of black plum, dried cherry, chocolate, and raisin. Personally, I was a fan of this wine. It was a little strong in flavor, but that was expected considering its higher alcohol content. I wouldn't want to drink this wine quickly, ...
